Mumbai: A serial thief who would allegedly approach residences posing as a carpenter and flee with whatever he could lay his hands has been arrested. Police said among the cases against the arrested accused is also suspected of theft at actor Karisma Kapoor’s Khar residence earlier this month.

They said Imtiaz Ansari (34) was arrested from Khar on Saturday evening based on a tip-off. “Ansari would call up landline numbers in the western suburbs at random and offer his services as a carpenter. Those taken in would hire him for odd carpentry jobs at home. After gaining entry, he would steal cash, debit and credit cards, cell phones and jewellery,” an officer at Khar police station said.

Senior PI Ramchandra Jadhav, Khar police station, added, “We had received a complaint round 12 days ago about Ansari stealing a debit card belonging to actor Karisma Kapoor using this modus operandi, and had registered a case of theft.”

The police, after arrested Ansari, discovered that he is responsible for five such offences in their jurisdiction, and 13 offences cases in Bandra, Santacruz, Juhu, Amboli, Versova, Vile Parle and Borivali.

He has been remanded in police custody till July 26, and other police stations will soon be seeking his custody in connection with cases registered with them.
