Seven days after he was admitted to St George Hospital for health complications, Chhagan Bhujbal was discharged on Monday and sent back to Arthur Road Jail.

Mr Bhujbal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 14 in connection with money laundering charges. He had been lodged at Arthur Road Jail after being remanded in judicial custody by a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act court. He was rushed to St George Hospital on April 18 after he complained of a toothache. Inquiries by the vigilance team of the prisons department found that Dr Rahul Ghule, a medical officer with the jail, had made changes in the prison records, making him eligible for a full health check-up instead of just a dental examination. Coincidentally, doctors at St George had found him suffering from a number of ailments and admitted him to the ICU.

“Mr Bhujbal was discharged on Monday afternoon and sent back to the prison. His blood pressure, which was the cause for concern, is under control, and his breathlessness is less severe,” said Dr Rohan Sequeira with St George Hospital, who had been attending to Mr Bhujbal.

An enquiry by JJ Hospital into Mr Bhujbal’s admission to the hospital has given a clean chit to the doctors at St George. A copy of the enquiry report has been sent to the prisons department.

The prison’s department, meanwhile, is conducting an inquiry into the alleged modifications made by Dr Ghule in prison records.
