Mumbai: Twelve people who had attended the party in Aarey Colony, Goregaon with Atharva Shinde, who was found dead with assault injuries by his family on Wednesday, were questioned by the police on Friday.
Police said the questioning and medical examination of these 12 youth had begun on Thursday. They said they were allowed to leave on Friday evening, but are likely to called in again for more inquiries.
Mystery shrouds the death of 20-year-old Atharva, the son of a Mumbai Police Economic Offences Wing officer, with the post mortem report pointing to a severe physical assault. According to his family, Atharva had attended the birthday party at a bungalow in Royal Palms society with his girlfriend on May 7.
One of the youth who was questioned by the police, who declined to be named, said, “Around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, I saw the girl Atharva had come with entering the bungalow covered in dirt. I didn’t see him.” Another youth added, “Atharva had come with the birthday girl's best friend; none of us knew him.”
Police Inspector Prakash Bele, Aarey police station, who is investigating the case, said, “We are verifying the claims made by those being questioned.” Atharva’s father, Senior PI Narendra Shinde, said, “The police are doing all they can. They have obtained CCTV footage from the entire area and are scanning it. I had tried getting touch with Atharva on Tuesday morning but could not, as his phone was switched off”
