Mumbai: A 21-year-old dentistry student with BYL Nair Hospital Dental College committed suicide in the college’s hostel at Kalachowky on Tuesday.

According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Bhagyalaxmi Mutha, a resident of Ichalkaranji.

“One of Bhagyalaxmi's friends had left her room key with her on Monday. Hence, she was calling Bhagyalaxmi, who did not turn up for classes. When repeated calls went unanswered, her friend asked someone to check on her. The friend went to Bhagyalaxmi’s room, but got no response to repeated knocking, after which he alerted the watchman,” said senior inspector Dilip Ugale, Kalachowky police station.

The watchman called the police control room, and the information was relayed to the Kalachowky police, who sent a team. The police broke open the door and found her to have committed suicide. She was taken to KEM Hospital where she was declared dead before admission.

“Bhagyalaxmi had sent one of her friends a text message that she was finding some portions of her syllabus very difficult, and was worried about the practical exam. She also spoke about it to several of her friends at the hostel, and they told her not to worry,” said Mr. Ugale.

Prima facie , she is believed to have killed herself due to the stress. No suicide note was found in the room or on her person.

The police ruled out foul play, and an accidental death report has been registered.
