Minister for Urban Affairs Manjalamkuzhi Ali on Saturday inaugurated the construction activities of a high-tech parking plaza-cum-commercial complex planned under the Calicut Development Authority on Railway Station Link (Jayaprakash Narayan) Road in the city.

The automated plaza is expected to solve the car parking problems in the heart of the city, especially on Railway Station Link Road, Annie Hall Road, Palayam, Sweet Meat Street, and on the stretch from Palayam to Kallayi.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ali hoped that such projects would resolve the parking problems, which had become a major challenge for civic bodies.

N.C. Aboobacker, the CDA chairman, presided over the inaugural function. Minister for Social Justice M.K. Muneer, who was the chief guest, said the CDA should conceive a similar project for parking lorries on the South Beach.

The 14- storeyed plaza would come up in 23 cents of land in the possession of the CDA. The first phase of the construction envisaged a commercial complex on four floors having a space of 10,000 sq ft.

Car parking space will be provided for 63 vehicles on seven floors of the plaza.

The fully automated and highly customised system uses a combination of mechanical devices and robotics for parking cars. The total cost will come to Rs.9 crore. City-based Yennarees Infrastructures will be entrusted with the project.

The construction will be done under Build-Operate-and-Transfer basis.

Deputy Mayor P.T. Abdul Latheef, former chairman of CDA M.C. Mayin Haji, KURDFC chairman K. Moideen Koya, Regional Town Planner K.V. Abdul Malik, and CDA executive engineer K.P. Ramesh, secretary A.M. Jayan, and Deputy Town Planner C. Hari Govind spoke at the function.
