A panel comprising officials from various government departments and experts will study the new mechanisms to be implemented as part of the traffic reforms proposed for the city.
District Collector U.V. Jose, who chaired a meeting here on Tuesday, said the Police Department had suggested that traffic systems in the city be modernised. Issues such as facilities for pedestrians; railings on roadsides; reconfiguration of zebra crosses; modernisation of bus shelters and setting up of new ones; construction of bus bays; installation of speed breakers and removal of unnecessary ones; and installation of street lights and signboards would be studied.
MLAs from the city would be urged to allocate funds to set up new bus stops. Damaged signal lights would be replaced. Officials of the Public Works Department were asked to submit a report on the traffic regulations to be implemented on the Ramanattukara-Chungam stretch of the State highway. As many as 12 people died on the stretch last year in road accidents, officials said.
The Kozhikode City Corporation would be asked to remove an advertisement board at the Thondayad Junction which is diverting the attention of drivers. An autorickshaw stand would be set up at Palayam where 20 autos could be parked. The autorickshaw parking slot near Baby Memorial Hospital would be relocated. The meeting decided to seek permission from the State government to operate another 10,000 autorickshaws.
