To ease the journey of the disabled

More than 100 persons with movement disability were presented with side-wheel scooters at a function held here on Sunday.

Minister for Social Justice and Panchayats M.K. Muneer inaugurated the programme that was part of the Subhayatra’, a project of the Kerala State Handicapped Persons Welfare Corporation (KSHPWC).

The Minister also conducted the Malabar Region inauguration of the project. The beneficiaries of the project were selected on the basis of their disability, financial status, and age after severe scrutiny to make sure that the deserving people got the benefits.

The aim of the project is to ensure mobility to the differently abled.

The Subhayatra project is an attempt to ensure equal opportunities to the differently abled, as well as their participation in all spheres of life, basic freedom, dignity, and social justice as per The Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation Act), 1995. The project will have more than 500 beneficiaries across the State.

Selected college students who are visually impaired were given laptops with tracking software during the programme.

Chairman of the KSHPWC Kalathil Abdulla presided over the function in which M.K. Raghavan, MP, was the chief guest.

Managing Director of the Corporation K.N. Roshan Bijlee, Kerala Urban and Rural Development Finance Corporation Chairman K. Moideen Koya, Kozhikode Municipal Corporation Councillor P. Kishenchand, District Sub Judge R.L. Baiju and Managing Director of Kerala Automobiles Abdul Latheef were present on the occasion.
