Around 300 former students of Zamorin’s Guruvayurappan College got together on the college campus here on Sunday to celebrate the annual Tree Day (Vriksha Dinam) under the aegis of its Old Students’ Association. Thirty-five banyan tree saplings were planted on the 100-acre campus by the alumni members as part of the programme.

College Principal Rathi Thampatti inaugurated the programme by handing over the tree saplings to the alumni members.

The participants sat in meditation for a while under the Bodhi Tree on the campus as part of the programme. T. Shobeendran, former teacher and noted environmentalist, led the meditation.

Talks were held on the importance of protecting the environment and safeguarding trees. Alumni association secretary V. Sajeev, vice-president Kattayattu Venugopal, and joint secretary Fazal ul Haque, among others, spoke. Members of the Bhumitra Sena nature club and volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS) attended the programme.
