Writer Kamala Suraiya was known for the down to earth portrayals of life around her and the autobiographic images she highlighted in her works. ‘Kamala Suraiya Smrithikal,’ an exhibition of paintings that began at the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi art gallery in Kozhikode on Saturday, brings to life those images that book lovers can easily relate to.
The series of paintings by artist C.R. Ravi is based on the various works of the writer, with Kamala in different phases of her life as the central image.
Here, we could see little Kamala playing around her ancestral home where she meets various characters that shaped her, including her grandmother, grandfather, cousins, mother, and uncles. Each painting has a story behind it, which is displayed in a small note beneath.
The exhibition, and a cultural meeting on the topic ‘Malayalam literature and migrant life’ organised by Malayalam Oman Chapter, were inaugurated by Minister for Social Welfare M.K. Muneer. Director of Malayalam Mission Thalekkunnil Basheer presided over the function. The Kamala Suraiya Award 2013, instituted by the Malayalam Oman Chapter, was presented to Mr. Ravi on the occasion.
The exhibition will conclude on February 5.
