One more doctor and a lab technician will be deputed to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Thalakkulathur grama panchayat where around 90 people have been diagnosed with jaundice in the past one week.

The timings of the outpatient ward at the health centre will be extended till 6 p.m. too.

This was decided at a meeting chaired by District Collector U.V. Jose here on Monday.

As the source of the outbreak is believed to be the “welcome drink” served at a private event on May 12, the local medical officer had been asked to collect details of those who had attended the function.

District Medical Officer V. Jayasree told The Hindu that so far 89 people had been diagnosed with the disease. Awareness campaigns will be intensified in the panchayat, and school students will be trained in hand-washing.

The Health Department is of the view that more cases may crop up in the coming days as the incubation period is up to 50 days, as around 2,000 people are believed to have attended the event.

The use of adulterated ice blocks while mixing the drink is suspected to have caused the outbreak.
