A migrant worker from Karnataka was killed after the retaining wall along the Canolly canal near Puthiyapal collapsed on him on Monday. Police identified the victim as Ayyan Durai, 65. The incident occurred around 9.30 a.m.

Labourers at the construction site said the wall collapsed on Durai while he was engaged in cleaning a drain as part of the canal widening. His body was retrieved from the debris after an hour-long effort.

Another migrant worker hailing from Kolkata had a narrow escape though he too was trapped under the wreckage. Midhun, 35, who suffered serious injuries, was admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College.
