The District Planning Committee (DPC) has endorsed the suggestions put forth by the grama panchayats on eliminating open defecation in the district.

At a meeting of the DPC held at the District Collectorate on Monday, it was decided that the local bodies in association with voluntary agencies take efforts to eliminate open defecation. An agreement would be inked between the local bodies and these agencies to ensure the Central government scheme was implemented without fail.

The programmes in the district would be conceived in tune with the State government’s objective to declare Kerala as open-defecation free on November 1.

In the first phase, Jalanidhi, a project of the Kerala Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, will construct toilets, wherever required, in all the 70 grama panchayats in the district before September 1.
