Skilled workers under the Swabhiman Project will now get accident cover as part of a new initiative of the Kozhikode district administration.

This comes as a huge relief to their employers who otherwise incur huge financial liability in cases of accidents at workplace.

Swabhiman is a project of the district administration that began in 2010.

Through this project, people who need skilled labourers like plumbers, electricians and mechanics can contact the workers registered under the project on phone to avail their services.

As per the new scheme, these labourers are liable to compensation as per the Employees Compensation Act of 1923 if they happen to be in an accident during work.

As a result, the employers, who earlier had to pay compensation to the labourers in case of accidents, have been relieved from the burden. As per the new scheme, they are to pay a monthly premium of Rs.400 to obtain an insurance security card.

The application forms are available from Swabhiman workers as well as at the civil station.

Only workers registered under Swabhiman will get the compensation as per the scheme.

The employers are to mark the names, identity card numbers and signatures of the Swabhiman workers whom they employ in the insurance security card provided to them.

Rs. 10 lakh

As per the Employees Compensation Act, an 18-year- old worker will get up to Rs.10 lakhs as accident compensation.

The amount goes up based on the age, experience and nature of work of the labourer.

As of now, there are more than 100 workers registered under the Swabhiman project in various categories.
