An additional sub-inspector at the Koyilandy police station, who allegedly attempted to withhold some of the documents seized in connection with a raid as part of ‘Operation Kubera’ in the rural area, was booked by the Rural police on Friday.
Officials of the Koyilandy circle office said that Karunakaran, who tried to keep the original documents with him without producing them in the court for further proceedings, was found absconding after the incident and they were on the lookout for him with the support of the cyber cell.
The documents included several blank cheque books, promissory notes, and stamp papers.
These were seized by the Rural police from the partner of a prominent jewellery group in the area, who, the police said, had duped several persons through a fraud financial scheme. Later, the police found the withheld documents abandoned at Koyilandy.
Sources said the police officer was trying to save some of the top accused in the case by deliberately hiding the evidence. “Instead of producing the seized documents, his plan was to replace them with other papers,” they said.
