Madhav R. Babu and Amith Geo Jose, students of St. Paul’s English Medium Higher Secondary School, Thenhipalam, Malappuram district, emerged champions in the senior category (Class VII to IX) of the 18th edition of The Hindu Young World Quiz Competition held in Kozhikode on Friday.
The team won 137 points in the final on-stage contest in which six teams from different schools competed with each other.
They were chosen after a preliminary round from participants drawn from the districts of Kasaragod, Kannur, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram and Palakkad. Incidentally, the winners had been placed third in the preliminary round based on a common written test.
Vaishnavu M. Santhosh and O. Devadathan of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Perumthiruthi, Kozhikode, came second, securing 65 points, followed by Gaurav Hareesh and Saketh Mahadevan from Veda Vyasa Vidyalayam, Malapparamba, Kozhikode with 59 points.
The remaining three teams – P. Nirupama and Roshan Paul Varghese (St. Paul’s English Medium Higher Secondary School, Thenhipalam); P.P. Nikhal Ibrahim and C.K. Rishan Mohammed (Government Higher Secondary School, Velakathur) and Navaneeth S. Ravi and Adwait Meethal (Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Perumthiruthi) got 54, 33 and 32 points respectively.
District Collector U.V. Jose, who was the chief guest, gave away prizes to the winners.
The on-stage competition was based on a buzzer using a 24-numbered matrix with a hidden picture of Virat Kohli, captain of the Indian cricket team.
The competitors were put through five topics including straight questions, photo play, and sight and sound, besides themes relating to Indian art, culture and history.
Only after the 17th round could all the participating guess the picture.
Though the teams successfully arrived at answers pertaining to the Internet such as the origin of Jerry’s Guide to the World Wide Web (Yahoo!), Blastoise of Pokémon species in Nintendo and brand logos, they stumbled for answers relating to Indian history and mythology and the Bible.
Barabbas query
An enthusiastic student from the audience promptly answered the question why Barabbas was an important figure in the Bible while the contesting finalists failed to guess the answer. None of the participants could identify the instrument Sarangi when it was played.
