Extensive cleaning under way at the Palayam vegetable market in Kozhikode on Wednesday as part of the city Corporation’s Mazhayethum Munpe project.

The extensive cleaning drive as part of Mazhayethum Munpe , the pre-monsoon cleaning drive of the city Corporation, began on Wednesday.

Mayor A.K. Premajam inaugurated the drive on the Palayam bus stand premises. Massive cleaning activity was undertaken, primarily in the vegetable market at Palayam, as part of it.

The Corporation had requested the public to actively take part in the drive and they responded positively and took part wholeheartedly in the cleaning activities.

Vegetable vendors and other merchants in the market actively took part in the drive. They cleaned the drains in the market and rearranged the slabs covering them. The solid waste was disposed off using the vehicles provided by the Corporation.

Corporation councillors and health officials led massive cleaning activities in other parts of the city.

The cleaning of the Corporation Office premises is scheduled for May 29. The cleaning drive will conclude by May 31.

As the arrival of monsoon coincides with the reopening of schools, the Corporation has given special emphasis on the health of students. The schools authorities have been directed to provide clean drinking water to the students and also to ensure cleanliness on the school premises.

Special squads have been appointed to ensure that water tanks in the schools are clean. Efforts are being made to check the sale of harmful substances near schools. Sale of pickled and brined fruits and vegetables has been banned. Such eatables will be confiscated and the shop owners fined if they failed to adhere to the ban.
