The youth who slapped Trinamool Congress MP and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee at a party rally in Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal, said on Monday he was associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), according to the police. Both the RSS and the ABVP have rubbished the claim.
“So far we know that the name of the youth who slapped Mr. Banerjee is Debashish Acharya (23). He has been arrested,” Superintendent of Police in Purba Medinipur district Sukesh Jain told The Hindu on Monday. District police sources told The Hindu that during the interrogation, Acharya confessed about his association with the ABVP and the RSS.”
“He also said that he was still in touch with the district leadership of the two organisations,” senior officials said.
RSS spokesperson in south Bengal Jishnu Basu told The Hindu, “Acahrya was never associated with the RSS. It is a false claim.” Rubbishing the claim of Mr. Acharya’s involvement with ABVP, its Bengal secretary Subir Haldar said,” He (Mr. Acharya) is not involved with the ABVP. I have never heard of him.”
BJP district president in Purba Medinipur, Tapan Kar, also denied any involvement of his party with Achariya. “He was never a BJP member. I do not know him.” he said.
