Mamata's nephew Abhishek Banerjee slapped on stage

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was slapped by an unidentified man in Chandipur in Purba Medinipur district in West Bengal on Sunday.

Mr. Banerjee was addressing a public meeting of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad — the TMC’s student wing — when the man got up on the stage and slapped him on the pretext of taking a picture on his cellphone. The meeting was cancelled after the incident.

The man was beaten up by the audience and TMC workers present there and had to be rushed to a hospital where he is currently undergoing treatment.

TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien said the party was looking into the matter and would see if any “outsider” was involved in it.

Members of the audience attacked the media too, mistaking the man to be a media person. Two persons of two vernacular news channels were beaten up following the Chandipur incident

Following the Saradha scam Ms. Banerjee decided to sidestep many senior leaders - perhaps to distance herself from the scam-tainted leaders - and started promoting her nephew Abhishek. Political observers are now more-or-less certain that 27 year Abhishek will succeed Ms. Banerjee once the party chief decides to hand-over her political legacy. While there is some disgruntlement in the party for sidelining senior leaders to prop up Abhisek, no one has openly questioned Ms. Banerjee's decision.
