In yet another instance of attempted suicide at a Kolkata metro rail station, a woman jumped onto the tracks at the Shobhabazar station on Wednesday. The incident took place around 9.45 am. This is the second suicide attempt at a metro station this week. Metro services were disrupted for nearly an hour. On Tuesday also a similar incident had taken place at the Rabindra Sarovbar station.
“Pinka De (30) jumped onto the tracks at Shobhabazar when the train was entering the station. The driver immediately applied emergency breaks. However, the woman did not receive any injury and was rescued by the metro rail staff,” Metro Railways spokesperson Indrani Banerjee said.
Ms. De was later taken to the State-run R.G. Kar Hospital.
The metro rail authorities, however, ruled out any spurt in the number of attempted suicides at metro stations. According to them, there have been 12 suicide attempts so far at metro stations this year, of which four resulted in casualties while eight persons were rescued. On Sunday a woman allegedly committed suicide the Esplanade metro station in central Kolkata. She died on the spot. In a bid to curb such suicide attempts, metro rail authorities have been monitoring CCTV footages and deployed RPF personnel have at the platforms.
