Amid growing clamour for action against Trinamool Congress MP Tapas Pal for his offensive comments, the party tried to put an end to the controversy by saying the matter has ended with Mr. Pal’s apology.

“[The] Party has accepted his apology,” said Trinamool spokesperson Derek O’ Brien. “The party believes that the tone and tenor of the letter was right and the matter ends there.” He was speaking after attending a meeting chaired by party chief Mamata Banerjee.

After local channels telecast Mr. Pal’s speech in which he threatened to kill CPI(M) workers and “unleash his boys to rape” their family members, the MP wrote to the party on Tuesday and apologised “unreser-vedly for [his] remarks.”

Ms. Banerjee said on Tuesday Mr. Pal had committed a “big blunder,” but gave ample hints that she did not plan to take any action against the MP. “What should I do? Kill him?” she had asked mediapersons.
