The Chennai Metro Rail Limited will commence construction of its first stormwater drain on B Road near the Koyambedu Wholesale Market. This is expected to considerably reduce water stagnation near the market during heavy rains.

The stormwater drain would run parallel to Poonamallee High Road for 500 metres and has been designed to handle rains of over 400 mm that is being recorded in the city. It is part of the construction of the elevated viaduct on a 4.5 km stretch between Koyambedu and Ashok Nagar.

Officials of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and the CMRL have already conducted a joint inspection of the locality before making a decision on the drain. The manholes would be constructed at an interval of 5 metres in the drain.

The work is the first drain by the CMRL to reduce stagnation. The CMRL would construct more drains as part of the Metro Rail work.
