The Chennai Corporation and Metrowater have been directed to synchronise efforts to ensure that stagnant water on roads gets drained within 30 minutes during the upcoming northeast monsoon.

Participating in a monsoon-preparedness meeting here on Thursday, minister for municipal administration and rural development K.P. Munusamy asked officials of the two agencies to enhance their efforts this season.

Remedial measures will also be taken based on information received by residents on the Corporation’s toll-free helpline 1913.

The minister stressed the need for monitoring both the amount of chlorine in drinking water. Remedial measures towards complaints pertaining to mixing of sewage with drinking water should be given priority, he said.

The Corporation has kept pumpsets ready to bale out water in low-lying areas.

Relief centres have been readied to help residents of low-lying areas in the city.

Corporation Commissioner D. Karthikeyan said most of the key stretches of stormwater drains have been desilted.
