“D.K. Pattammal’s music should be heard, not spoken about,” said vocalist T.M. Krishna, who was conferred with the D.K. Pattammal ‘Birudhu’ and the ‘Isaijothi’ title on Saturday.
Presented by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in association with Aanmajothi and Rotary Club of Madras East, the award is part of commemoration of the 95th birth anniversary of legendary vocalist D.K. Pattammal.
“In my life, her music was a very important influence as well as inspiration. I have heard many of her kutcheris and came out feeling so full. The sense of fullness is what music is. And, it is a great honour to be given an award in her memory,” said Mr. Krishna.
Yesteryear actor P.S. Sachu, who is also member secretary of Tamil Nadu Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram, recalled how she received the blessings of Pattammal upon completion of 55 years in the film industry.
K.N. Ramaswamy, director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, said this was the fourth year of the award.
The evening, which began with a tribute performance by Lalitha Sivakumar, Nithyasree Mahadevan, Parur M.A. Krishnaswamy and Poongulam Subramaniam, ended with a performance by T.M. Krishna, R. Hemalatha, Arun Prakash and S. Krishna.
The anniversary celebrations began on Friday and will conclude on Sunday.
