A one-day workshop on “Health and Herbs” by Post-Graduate Department of Microbiology, Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, was held on September 11.
The workshop was chaired by Dr. G. Prince Manoharan, Managing Director, Vasantham Herbals. He explained in detail about organ clock theory in human.
“The 12 human organs in our body have a built-in clock. Every organ has a maintenance schedule on daily basis. The day starts at 3.00 a.m. The energy enters the lung at this time. The time is good for breathing exercise,” he said. The more you know about your body, the easier it is to maintain your health, he added. He called upon the professors and students to include fruits, greens and vegetables in their diet for a healthy life.
“Herbal medicines can be prepared at home for common ailments. We can also save money as we would be using the ingredients used for daily cooking. You don’t need to purchase expensive skin care products to make the skin glow. Lavender can be used as a home-made solution for facial cleaning. Aloe Vera, a popular skin treatment plant, is often used in making skin care products,” he said.
Dr. Manoharan also listed various herbal remedies for cold, cough, asthama, skin diseases, hair fall, and tiredness.
S. Nisy, Assistant Professor, Department of Microbiology, said: “The objective of the workshop is to impart knowledge and significance of indigenous medicinal plants. The students will undergo training to make various herb-based medicinal products. The workshop will also enable students to start small-scale industrial units of herbal products.”
Saplings of medicinal herbs and a booklet on how to make herbal products at home were distributed to professors and students. Over 150 students of life sciences from various colleges participated.
