The Superintendent of Police, Kancheepuram Police District, C. Vijayakumar has called upon personnel involved in traffic management to keep themselves abreast of pre-hospital trauma care techniques.

Inaugurating a three-day pre-hospital trauma care techniques training programme for policemen and home guards as part of the Road Safety Week here on Saturday, the SP said that more accidents take place in Kancheepuram Police District limits since three major roads — Grand Southern Trunk Road, Grand Western Trunk Road and East Coast Road — serve as the gateway to Chennai.

Mr.Vijayakumar said that out of the 3,600 accidents that took place last year, 600 were fatal accidents with 820 deaths. Many of the cases involved driver fatigue including bus drivers who were on the wheel for more than 12 hours at a stretch. Police personnel who rush to the accident spot could save some lives if they knew basic pre-hospital trauma care techniques, he added.

Members of Indian Medical Association, Kancheepuram branch, gave a demonstration of first aid techniques for the benefit of participants.
