SHRC seeks report on burial of 70-year-old man

Body was taken in garbage cart for burial

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has issued notices to authorities seeking a report on the transportation of the dead body of a 70-year-old man in a garbage cart to the burial ground from the Sholinghur Government Hospital in Vellore district recently.

The Commission, headed by Justice T. Meenakumari, has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports of the incident and issued notices to the Vellore Collector, Director of Town Panchayats and the Director of Medical & Rural Health Services over the incident and has sought a detailed report within four weeks. The old man was found dead on Post Office Street on March 27. The police was alerted through the Village Administrative Officer and then the body was taken to the hospital for autopsy. The body was then taken in a garbage cart to the burial ground, one km from the hospital.
