‘Power tariff hike may hurt industry’

Published - November 26, 2014 02:11 am IST - CHENNAI:

Owners of manufacturing units in Ambattur Industrial Estate that are struggling amid various challenges fear that the proposed power tariff hike will deal them a crippling blow.

Spread over 1,200 acres, the industrial estate has over 2,500 units dealing mostly in automobile components. About 5,000 tiny units are dependent on the industries in Ambattur.

However, the recent measures by the State government threaten to affect production, say industrial unit owners.

According to members of Ambattur industrial estate manufacturers association (AIEMA), the proposed increase in the electricity tariff for industries by 30-40 per cent will have a severe impact. “We recently submitted a petition to the Rural Industries Minister P.Mohan to reconsider the proposal,” said AIEMA president K.Sai Sathya Kumar.

AIEMA vice president V. Raju said several major players were shifting to other States due to subsidies.
