In a freak accident on Kamaraj Salai on Friday afternoon, a traffic police inspection car, much ahead of the Chief Minister’s convoy, collided with a motorcyclist at top speed.

The rider escaped with minor injuries while his two-wheeler was damaged beyond recognition.

According to the police, the accident took place around 1.20 p.m., when the traffic police MUV carrying assistant commissioner Pichumani was coming off Kamaraj Salai after the officer made last-minute inspections to clear the route for the CM’s convoy to pass.

The motorcyclist, identified as photostat machine technician Karthik Marimuthu (23) of Ayanavaram, was coming from Pycrofts Road and tried to enter Kamaraj Salai when his motorcycle collided with the police vehicle.

The youngster was thrown away on impact and landed on the road but miraculously escaped with laceration on his left arm and legs.

He was taken to Government Royapettah Hospital for a check-up and discharged soon after.

The front portion of his motorcycle, including the handlebar, forks and front wheel, was completely detached from the vehicle upon collision. The side portion of the police vehicle too was badly damaged.

The city police carried out a preliminary probe into the accident that took place just minutes before the CM’s convey was scheduled to pass. The youth was questioned and later let off.
