The organs of a 56-year-old man, who was declared brain dead at Global Health City, were donated by his family members.
Philomin Raj, a resident of Chennai, was admitted to the hospital with a history of sudden onset of aphasia with right hemiplegia, on February 2. The patient was admitted to the neurology ICU and was on ventilator support.
He was declared brain dead on February 12 and his family expressed their willingness to donate his organs. Following approval from the Tamil Nadu Cadaver Transplant Programme authorities, his liver and kidneys were harvested and transplanted to patients in need of organ transplant at Global Health City.
Initially, one of the kidneys was harvested and taken to Fortis Malar Hospital but the transplant could not be carried out as planned as the recipient developed fever.
As the kidney was returned at the last moment, another recipient at Global Health City was identified through cross-matching of blood, said an official.
The heart valves and eyes were harvested and sent to other hospitals in the city, according to a press release.
According to the website of the State cadaver transplant programme, a total of 1,323 major organs — heart, lung, kidney and liver — have been donated by 445 persons in the State from October 2008 to January 31, 2014.
