New toilets to be in five zones

Over half of the Chennai Corporation’s newly-designed toilets will be restricted to five zones of the central region of the city. As many as 2,000 toilets are to be installed in crowded areas in all 15 zones.

The five zones of Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet and Kodambakkam in the central region of the city will get 1,024 of the toilets. Most of these areas were identified based on a survey by the civic body and are commercial localities that lack toilet.

Teynampet zone with 396 such toilets will have the largest number. Many commercial areas where crowds throng have been identified in the zone for installation of the facilities.

The toilets will be made of high-density polyethylene or polycarbonate sheets or an equivalent material. The structures will be constructed under a public-private partnership mode. The private entity will build, operate and then transfer the toilets to the civic body after a stipulated period. The rights of advertisement on space in the toilets will be made available to the private agency.
