The de-recognition of Ambedkar-Periyar Study circle by management of IIT Madras has triggered a renewed interest in the ideas of both the leaders throughout India.

An Ambedkar-Periyar study circle which will operate out of  Panuval book store in Thiruvanmayur was inaugurated by Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi's chief, Thol. Thirumavalavan, at ICSA centre here on Thursday.

He unveiled a logo of the study circle, painted by Trotsky Marudhu, which was based on a photograph featuring Ambedkar and Periyar taken at the Burma conference.

Speaking at the inauguration, he called for close collaboration of Ambedkarites, Periyarists and Marxists .

“We have to unite in this fight. It is important for the younger generation to understand the importance of caste and social justice,” he said.

Lambasting the way the IITs have operated in India, he said that reservation had not been implemented properly in these institutes.

“There have also been several cases of Dalit students committing suicide whilst studying in IIT,” he said, adding that there had been serious allegations of nepotism against the previous director of IIT Madras.

Accusing the IIT Madras for being under the grip of upper castes, he said the management had provided a good opportunity to start similar study circles in institutions across Tamil Nadu.

Professor A. Marx, Viduthalai Rajendran and painter Trotsky Marudhu also participated.
