A 30-year-old man who strangled his wife to death and staged it as a suicide was arrested by the police on Saturday.

Korattur police said Madhiprakasam, a lathe worker at a private firm in Ambattur Industrial Estate, lived in Avvai Nagar, Korattur, with his wife Vanaja (28) and their nine-month-old daughter Preeti.

On Thursday evening, Madhiprakasam returned home from work and told his wife he had a headache. When he asked Vanaja to hand over the pain balm, she reportedly hurled it at him. An infuriated Madhiprakasam got into a heated argument with his wife.

“Some family matters came up in the argument and Vanaja accused Madhiprakasam’s mother of something. This irked him more and he retaliated by hitting her and strangling her with the dupatta she was wearing. Vanaja died on the spot,” an investigating officer said.

In an attempt to stage Vanaja’s death as a suicide, Madhiprakasam took her to a hospital nearby along with his landlord. The doctors there pronounced her as dead on arrival and the Korattur police was alerted, the officer said.

An RDO enquiry was carried. The probe revealed that Madhiprakasam had strangled his wife to death. He confessed to the killing upon interrogation, the police said. The couple had been married for two years.

Madhiprakasam was arrested on Saturday, remanded in judicial custody and sent to Puzhal prison.
