Disturbed over the report that Shihan Hussaini, a karate trainer, nailed himself to a cross in her support, the AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Monday appealed to him not to take any step that may endanger his life.

In a letter to him, Ms. Jayalalithaa said she was “deeply shocked and distressed” over his action.

The karate trainer had performed the act as a mark of offering prayer for her to become Tamil Nadu Chief Minister again.

Thanking him for the concern shown in her interest, Ms. Jayalalithaa said, “I consider that subjecting oneself to such an extreme act of self-inflicted pain should be avoided” and advised him to take good care of himself.
