After refusing to endorse any brand for almost five decades, actor Kamal Haasan will be shooting his first television commercial for popular textile brand Pothys on the outskirts of Chennai on Wednesday. So far, the 60-year-old Kamal Haasan has appeared only in public service announcements.

Speaking about the endorsement, S Ramesh, managing director of Pothys, said that the deal had been in the making for the last two years. “We have been constantly in touch, but Kamal Haasan took his time to decide. He will be endorsing the entire Pothys brand.”

Asked about Kamal Haasan’s remuneration, S. Ramesh declined to go into details. The advertisement, which will be directed by Krishnakumar Ramkumar, will hit the screens on Diwali day.

“Kamal will wear a smart suit for the advertisement, which will be shot in a resort on the outskirts of Chennai. We are talking to composer Ghibran to do the background score,” said Mr. Ramkumar. He further said that the commercial will highlight the similarity between the two brands – Kamal Haasan and Pothys – which have flourished for decades.

Asked if this would be a one-off instance, a source close to Kamal Haasan said that the actor will be choosy about endorsing other brands. He has had a busy 2015 with two movies releasing close to one another –Uttama Villain in May and Papanasam in July. The actor is awaiting the release of his next, Thoongavanam, which also stars Trisha and Prakash Raj, on Diwali day.
