HC comes to professor’s aid

It has taken three orders from the Madras High Court for S. Kuppusamy to retain his position as in-charge of the Department of Indian History at the University of Madras.

Professor Kuppusamy was denied promotion as associate professor and then as the head of department despite satisfying the .

The court, however, ruled that he should be promoted. Being promoted also made him an eligible contender for the post of the head of the department.

When the University sought to appoint a new head of the department, Mr. Kuppusamy had to approach the court again. The court directed the University’s Vice Chancellor and Registrar that he be made the ‘in-charge head’ of the department.

In a further development, the University issued a notification seeking applications for the post of professor for the Department of Indian History.

Mr. Kuppusamy filed a contempt of court application after which the court ordered that while the VC and Registrar could proceed with the notification they cannot tamper with the position that Mr. Kuppusamy seeks.
