The Government Railway Police (GRP) has asked for a missing persons list from Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and New Delhi in an attempt to identify the headless body of a man that was found inside a trunk, on the Grand Trunk Express train when it arrived at Central Railway Station in March this year.
The body was found in an abandoned trunk in the unreserved compartment, with its hands and legs tied up. The train reached the station at 6.25 a.m. on platform 4. A railway mail services staff member, Perumal, who was attending to the mail van behind the engine, noticed a foul smell emanating from the trunk.
Perumal alerted the Railway Protection Force (RPF), who then handed over the trunk to the platform inspector. As it was locked, it was put into a scanner. Theheadless body was then found in it. The GRP was alerted and the body was sent for a post-mortem examination to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.
The body was wrapped in a polythene bag, and was clad in a white round-necked T Shirt and shorts. The age of the victim is suspected to be around 45. “We are waiting for the missing persons list to find out if the body matches any of them,” said V. Ponramu, deputy superintendent of police, GRP, Chennai Central.
The police are also trying to identify the body body using the brand of the T-shirt the victim was wearing. “Though the T-shirt was manufactured in Tirupur, the brand is worn mainly in Uttar Pradesh, New Delhi and Mumbai. ,” added Ponramu.
The GRP also went a step further and checked the Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage of all the stations between New Delhi and Chennai but did not find anything suspicious,” said Ponramu.
GRP personnel also met Sarai Rohilla police personnel in New Delhi, where the headless body of a woman was found near Inderlok Metro Station. “When we investigated, we found there was no connection between the two incidents,” said a GRP officer.
