There has been a spike in the number of accidents at the intersection of Luz Church Road and Ramakrishna Math Road, which has forced motorists and pedestrians to request the Chennai Traffic Police (CTP) to discontinue the free-left option and also ensure installation of pedestrian signals.
According to motorists frequenting the Luz signal, motorists taking a free left towards Luz Church Road from Ramakrishna Math Road are cause of the traffic chaos at the junction.
“Motorists turn at a breakneck speed at the intersection. As a result, those proceeding towards Luz Church Road from Kutchery Road and Royapettah High Road face the risk of being knocked down when the signal goes green,” points out B. Kannan, a motorist.
What’s more, motorists coming from Royapettah High Road are also, at times, found guilty of taking a highly risky right turn.
Pedestrians are always at the receiving end of such irresponsible road behaviour.
Encroachments by vendors have forced pedestrians to walk in the carriageway.
According to a CTP official, installation of signals at the intersection could also address the issue.
“We have received similar complaints from road users at the intersection of Anna Salai, Deputy Mayor Kabalamurthy Road and Swami Sivananda Salai. Installation of a traffic signal at the intersection to facilitate a right turn led to a favourable result.
“We will consider installing a signal for left turn as well at the Luz Church Road-Ramakrishna Math Road intersection,” he says.
