Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah on Monday asked all universities to adhere to the suggestions made by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to ensure the safety of women on college campuses.
In a meeting with vice chancellors of universities across the State at the Raj Bhavan on Monday, he requested them to take on board UGC’s recommendations, which include organising gender sensitisation programmes for students.
The governor also said that the problem of encroachment of university land had been brought to his notice and that V-C’s should keep watch and coordinate with district collectors to preserve unused university land through fencing, for future expansion programmes.
The meeting saw the participation of V-Cs of 19 universities as well as senior government officials.
Mr. Rosaiah also asked university officials to focus on assessment of standards of various funding agencies such as UGC, DST and AICTE among others. He asked the Tamil Nadu Open University, Thiruvalluvar University, Tamil Nadu Teacher Education University and Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University to obtain the UGC’s 12 B status, to be eligible to receive central assistance from the UGC.
He then urged educational institutions to use video-conferencing facilities to ensure better reach.
P. Palaniappan, State minister for higher education asked the V-C’s to ensure their students were using laptops given to them, under a government scheme, for research and educational purposes.
