Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M. Karunanidhi on Sunday expressed the hope that the first day of Thai, one of the months of the Tamil almanac, would again become the Tamil New Year Day when a government of Tamil enthusiasts was voted to power.
“Leave alone the DMK. A day will certainly come when Tamil enthusiasts will form the government. That day, the first day of Thai will become the beginning of the Tamil New Year,” he said, addressing a public meeting organised by his party against, what the party called anti-people polices of the AIADMK government.
Poser
Reacting to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's poser why he had waited till 2008 to notify Thai as the Tamil New Year, Mr Karunanidhi said that he had decided to do it when he was provided with scientific and rational explanations on the change in the Tamil New Year.
He wondered how a government, which could not even digest a nameboard bearing the word ‘Semmozhi' (Classical Tamil), could protect the Tamil language.
“Not following decisions”
He contended that the Chief Minister herself was not following any of her government's decisions.
In this context, he referred to the order issued by the AIADMK government during the previous term, allowing students to take the first letter of the names of their mothers also as their initial.
“Propel it into action”
The DMK leader said the electoral defeats would not kill the spirit of the party and it would further propel it into action.
