Residents of Sembakkam have sought the cancellation of the 2010 notification by Archaeological Survey of India, issued to local bodies through Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.

Representatives of residents of Samraj Nagar, VGP Pon Nagar, Tarakeswari Nagar, Palaniappa Nagar and Jayendra Nagar, who met early this week, unanimously passed a resolution seeking the cancellation of the gazette notification and also appealed to the State government to allay the fears of residents.

The notification included restrictions on construction within 100 metres from the site and regulations on land between 100 and 300 metres from the site. As their houses are located on pre-historic sites, earmarked as restricted areas and they cannot make alterations, the residents said property prices had dipped.

President of Sembakkam Region Residents Welfare Associations, G. Murugan said more than 30,000 families are affected in Sembakkam by this notification.
