The two-year demand of Thiruvengada Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association for a park on a nine-ground plot at Thiruvengada Nagar, Ambattur, came to an end on Friday last.
On that day, the park was inaugurated by Dairy Development Minister V. Moorthy and Chennai Mayor Saidai S. Duraiswamy.
Deputy Mayor P. Benjamin and Chennai Corporation Councillor Kumari Harikrishnan were also present on the occasion.
S. Suresh, secretary of the association, said the land was under the control of Venkatapuram Building Society for a long time.
“Our perseverance and repeated requests to the society made them to hand over the land to the erstwhile Ambattur Municipality.
The association requested the then Municipal officials to develop a park on the plot.
In December 2012 , the Chennai Corporation began the work with an outlay of over Rs. 50 lakh,” he added.
The park was scheduled for inauguration in May this year and it was delayed a number of times due to political reasons, insiders in Chennai Corporation said.
Some of the features of the park are 200-metre walkway, a play area for children, and a stage for yoga. Many medicinal plants has been planted. A washroom facility is also in place. Residents thanked the officials concerned.
Sowmyaram Babu, the association president, said that in 2010, the association developed a roadside park under ‘Namakku Naamey Thittam,’ at a cost of Rs.4.8 lakh. He attributed it to the residents’ cooperation as well. “Now, the association has a plan to develop another park on Southern Road. Our mission is making this colony an ideal place to live in,” he added.
