Constable attacked, 2 held

A policeman attached to the Intelligence Section (IS) of the city police was attacked by two men in Broadway on Friday night after he caught them gambling.

The North Beach police said the victim, a constable attached to the IS unit of north Chennai was headed home after duty. Around 11.30 p.m., he spotted two men, later identified as Dhanasekar (27) and Chinnapparaj (47) from Broadway, playing cards near the Broadway bus terminus.

He asked the men to leave the spot and an argument ensued. The two men got into a fistfight with the policeman and threw stones at him when he attempted to get on his motorcycle. Attempts by the policeman to pin down the duo failed and they fled the scene.

The constable lodged a complaint with the North Beach police, who later apprehend the two men. They were remanded to judicial custody on Saturday, the police added.
