Starting Friday, a total of 203 Amma canteens will supply chapathis for dinner.
The Chennai Corporation has commissioned equipment in all 15 zones to enable supply of four lakh chapathis a day. At least 2,000 chapathis and dal are likely to be supplied in each of the canteens in each ward.
A plate of two chapathis will cost Rs. 3.
Four women personnel from self-help groups have been roped in by each of the ward councillors for serving chapathis. At present, the canteens sell idli for one rupee, sambar rice, curry leaf rice for Rs. 5 and curd rice for Rs 3. The canteens also serve pongal for Rs.5 for breakfast.
For now, only chapathis will be available at dinner time (between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.). Those visiting Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, Stanley Government Hospital and Institute of Child Health, Egmore, can have dinner at Amma canteens hereafter, officials said.
The project aims at providing healthy food at reasonable prices to residents living in slums, daily labourers, drivers, load-men and migrant workers. A number of councillors recently requested the Mayor to use the services of poor women from their wards in the canteens.
Breakfast is supplied from 7 a.m. to noon at the canteens. Lunch is served till 3 p.m.
