With a majority of residential areas experiencing power blackout for the last two days, residents are distressed. Going by what officials of the electricity department have to say, their agony will continue for two more days.

According to these officials, it will two days for power supply to be resumed in several areas, which include Velachery, Guindy, Ekkatuthangal, Taramani, Adambakkam, Nanganallur, Thiruvanmiyur, Manali, Perumbakkam, and Thoraipakkam.

Disruption in power supply has led to several communication networks to be shut off, which has compounded the problem of the residents.

Tempers have been rising with residents in Velachery and other areas taking to the streets to protest the delay in the resumption of power supply.

A senior official of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) said four important 230 kilo volt (KV) substations that fed electricity to 110 KV substations had been flooded causing power supply to be switched off.

The four substations are: Taramani, Guindy, KITS Park in Perumbakkam and Manali.

The official said all steps were being taken to drain out water and they were also exploring other options to bring power from other substations to the affected areas.

One is bringing power from the Siruseri substation to the Velachery substation.

“Even if power is sourced from other areas it may take a while to power-up houses in Velachery, as water had seeped into meter boards and pillar boxes on hundreds of streets,” he added.

While the power supply could not be distributed in several parts of south Chennai due to flooding of the 230 KV substations (where three substations are covered), in north Chennai electricity has not been provided, keeping safety in mind.

The officials of Tangedco said power was cut off only in minor pockets in areas such as Jamalia, Otteri, Kolathur, Perambur, Kodungaiyur, Madipakkam, Tambaram and Medavakkam for the past two days due to water stagnation.
