The 23rd Metropolitan Magistrate Court at Saidapet has issued a non-bailable warrant to V. Packrisamy, Regional officer, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Saturday on the charge of defaming S.Ve. Shekar, member of the board on WhatsApp.

Mr. Shekar’s counsel Mylai Sathya said Packrisamy was summoned to the court on July 24 in connection with a defamation case. “He did not turn up. Hence on Saturday, the judge issued a warrant and directed the Abhiramapuram police station to arrest him,” said the lawyer.

According to a petition filed by Mr. Shekar, he became a member of the board on January 19. “Subsequently, in an interview to the media, he had said that he would make the board corruption-free and initiate immediate action on complaints,” said Mr. Sathya.

The petition reads that Packrisamy misunderstood that Mr. Sekhar was targeting him and spread defamatory content about Mr. Sekhar on WhatsApp among some panel members. A case was filed under section 499 and 500 of IPC (defamation and its punishment). The case came up for hearing on June 11 and summons were issued for Packrisamy to appear in court on July 24. “Since he chose not to appear, the court issued the warrant with a direction to police to produce him at court,” Mr. Sathya said. The matter was posted for further hearing on August 20.
