Central Crime Branch of the city police arrested a cine actor who allegedly cheated a man to the tune of Rs. 5 lakh after promising him an overseas job.

CCB sources said the accused S. Pavan Kumar (25), a resident of Valasaravakkam and a B.E. Computer Science graduate, had acted in a Tamil and a Telugu film.

The actor had befriended the victim Manikandan (25), a resident of Ayanavaram, through some common friends. “Pavan knew Manikandan was searching for a job and promised Manikandan that he would find a supervisor job overseas for him, through his contacts in the film industry. Taking him at his word, Manikandan gave Pavan Rs. 5 lakh in cash during mid 2009,” said sub inspector N. Ravivarman, an investigating officer in the case. But Pavan failed to find the job for Manikandan and didn’t return the money even after repeated requests.

Manikandan then lodged a complaint and a CCB team probed the matter and arrested Pavan Kumar from near his house on Wednesday evening. He was remanded to custody on Thursday, sources said.
