Residents of Thiruvengadapuram, a locality in Vengambakkam village, have appealed to the Agaramthen panchayat officials to develop a park on a land earmarked for the purpose.

In the layout of this residential section, located adjacent to Rathinamangalam, ten cents were earmarked for the construction of a park.

However, it is over thirty years since the layout was drawn up, however, no steps have been taken to create a park.

Lack of drains

That is the least of the problems in this neighbourhood. As it lacks stormwater drains, rainwater stagnates on the land, which promotes breeding of mosquitoes.

A.R. Lakshmanan, president, Thiruvengadapuram Residents Welfare Association (TRWA), says, “The area meant for the park gets inundated whenever it rains. Steps must be taken to develop the park and also construct stormwater drains to prevent flooding. Once the stormwater drains are constructed, a provision should be made for the rainwater to drain into the Agaram lake, which will help recharge the groundwater table.”

Erratic fogging

Constant dumping of garbage in vacant plots and irregular clearance of garbage contribute to the mosquito menace.

“Fogging is not carried out properly. Due to swarms of mosquitoes, we are forced to stay indoors and keep the windows closed throughout the day,” says V. Govindarajulu, a resident.

Petitions sent to the Kancheepuram Collectorate, Agaramthen panchayat officials and the Block Development Officer, Kancheepuram, have not yielded results.
