On Saturday, students in Chennai had an opportunity to learn engineering concepts in a fun way, at a two-day science workshop ‘Big Bang’ conducted by LMES Academy and Sri Sai Ram Engineering College in Tambaram on Saturday.

Inaugurating the event, CEO, Sairam Group of Institutions, J. Saiprakash Leo Muthu said the initiative would go a long way in tapping students’ skills and help them understand basic science. “Camps such as this one will guarantee hands-on experience for the budding innovators,” Mr. Saiprakash said.

Engineering concepts are often seen as complicated and many students do not understand the basic concepts on which they have to build their projects. To address this, LMES Academy ensures that, through workshops, schoolchildren learn the sciences the right way, using activities that help relate science and engineering to real life.

The ‘friction’ theory was experimented with two notebooks, used for lifting a car, by LMES Founder-Director, Premanand Sethurajan and a team of volunteers amidst the students, parents and academicians. Similarly, the team explained the theory of ‘pressure’ by lying down on a nailed bed.

Mr. Premanand Sethurajan told The Hindu , “The camp envisages understanding of engineering concepts with small projects, which many participants loved, and this we are planning to take to other areas and government-run schools too. Many students, however, don’t even understand the basics, so it is difficult to teach them complicated concepts. Which is why we decided to teach schoolchildren to change their approach to science and engineering,” he said.

“Over here, we have been doing something productive, something which never happens in school. I am glad that I came for this workshop rather than go on holiday,” Anirudh Srinivasan, a student from Zion Matriculation HSS., said.

Over 150 students in class 6 and 10 from different schools participated.
