25 sovereigns of jewellery stolen from house

October 16, 2013 08:43 am | Updated 08:43 am IST - CHENNAI:

Burglars walked into a house in Choolai and made off with over 25 sovereigns of jewellery and some cash on Monday.

According to the police, Umapathy, who works as a revenue inspector in Mylapore, lives with his family on Sattanan Street in Choolai. He stays on the first floor of a two-storeyed building. A few shops operate from the ground floor.

On Sunday, he and his family went to Tirupati. Around 2.30 a.m. on Tuesday, he returned and found the lock of the grille gate broken. Inside, the cupboard was open and the jewels kept in it were missing. He informed the Vepery police.

The police have registered a case and further investigation is on. T. Jeyakumar, Vepery crime inspector, said that the inmates had not locked the house before going out of station. “It was sheer carelessness on the part of the residents. The burglar did not break the lock, so it is very difficult to take fingerprints. However, we are following up on a few leads,” he said.
