February 12, 2013 10:37 am | Updated November 16, 2021 10:28 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Police have detained 17 persons who trespassed into the Kodungaiyur dumping yard on Sunday.

They were allegedly responsible for the fire in the Kodungaiyur dumping yard recently.

Residents of Kodungaiyur on Sunday staged protests demanding that the Chennai Corporation stop dumping garbage there. They agreed to go back to their homes only after the police intervened.

A haze of smoke continues to envelope the locality.

Corporation Commissioner Vikram Kapur inspected the dumping yard on Monday. The work on putting out the fire is under way and would be over next week, officials said.

A group of experts will hold meetings with civic body officials on Thursday to chalk out new strategies to cope with such challenges. Pipes are likely to be installed as a vent for methane gas that gets accumulated in the waste.
